Golden Rules Around Dogs

Remember these and you'll always be safe!

DO These Things

  • Always ask the owner before petting a dog
  • Let the dog sniff your hand first
  • Be calm and gentle around animals
  • Tell an adult if you see a hurt or lost animal

DON'T Do These

  • Don't touch a dog while it's eating or sleeping
  • Don't run or scream near dogs
  • Don't pull ears, tail, or fur
  • Don't take a dog's toy or treat away

What If a Dog Bites You?

Stay calm. Do these 3 steps right away.

1

Tell an Adult

Find a grown-up right away. You will NOT get in trouble for telling!

2

Wash the Wound

Use soap and running water. Wash for at least 10 minutes.

3

See a Doctor

Go to a doctor or hospital quickly. They will make sure you are safe.

⚠️ Even a small scratch can be serious. Always tell an adult — no matter what!

How Dogs Show Their Feelings

Dogs can't talk — but their body tells you how they feel!

Happy Dog

  • 🐕 Tail wagging fast
  • 😌 Relaxed, soft body
  • 👅 Mouth open and relaxed
  • 👀 Soft, squinty eyes

✅ Might be okay to approach — but always ask the owner first!

Scared or Angry Dog

  • 😤 Growling or snarling
  • 🦷 Showing teeth
  • 💪 Stiff, tense body
  • 👂 Ears flat or pinned back

Stay away! Do NOT run. Use the "Be a Tree" trick!

💡 If you're not sure how a dog feels — always stay away. Better safe than sorry!

The "Be a Tree" Trick

If a scary dog comes near you, use this trick!

1

Stand Still

Don't move. Don't run. Stay like a statue!

2

Hands Down

Put your hands quietly by your sides. No waving!

3

Look Down

Look at the ground quietly. Don't stare at the dog.

🌳 When you stay calm like a tree, dogs lose interest and walk away!
